SPRING LAWN CARE GUIDE FOR ADELAIDE

SEPTEMBER TIPS

September marks the beginning of spring in Adelaide. Lawns are coming out of winter dormancy and starting to grow again. While this is an exciting time, it’s also when many homeowners make mistakes by doing too much, too soon.

Getting the timing right in early spring will determine how well your lawn recovers from winter and how strongly it grows through the warmer months.

Mowing in Early Spring

As growth resumes, it’s important to mow frequently enough so that you never remove more than one-third of the leaf blade in a single cut. If your lawn has put on significant growth, increase mowing frequency rather than cutting it too low at once. Scalping the lawn at this stage can slow recovery and weaken the turf.

Watering as Temperatures Rise

As the weather warms up, deep and infrequent watering becomes more important than light, frequent sprinkling. Applying a good soaking every few days encourages deeper root growth and helps the lawn handle increasing temperatures better.

Dry patches often become more noticeable in spring. These are commonly caused by water repellence in the thatch layer. Using a quality wetting agent can help water move more effectively into the root zone in these areas.

Weed Control

September through to November is generally the most effective window to treat broadleaf weeds with selective herbicides. At this time of year, weeds are growing actively, which makes treatments more efficient.

Common spring weeds in Adelaide include Soursobs, Creeping Oxalis, Bindi, and Capeweed. Dealing with them early now prevents them from flowering and setting seed later in the season.

When to Start Lawn Renovation

This is an important point: even though your lawn is waking up, it is still early in the growing season. We generally recommend waiting until the grass is actively growing and has developed enough leaf area before carrying out renovation work such as scarifying or aeration.

Starting too early can stress the lawn, as it may still be drawing on stored energy reserves rather than producing enough energy through photosynthesis. For most warm-season lawns in Adelaide, this usually means waiting until growth is well underway before beginning major renovation work.
