Lawn Care Tips for March

Autumn is when Mother Nature works with you instead of against you. Our March hints tell you how fertilising at the right time, understanding the growth phases of your lawn and addressing dry patches can help you have a green, lush lawn.

WHY AUTUMN FERTILISING IS CRITICAL FOR ADELAIDE LAWNS

MARCH GUIDE

March marks the beginning of autumn in Adelaide, and this is one of the most important times of the year to fertilise your lawn.

As the days get shorter and temperatures start to cool, grass plants naturally begin producing more rhizomes (underground runners). These rhizomes create new grass plants that knit together, resulting in a thicker, denser lawn. However, how much the lawn thickens up depends heavily on the nutrients available to the grass during this period.

Many homeowners reduce or stop fertilising once summer ends. This is a missed opportunity. With the right approach in autumn, you can significantly improve the density and health of your lawn going into winter.

Why Autumn Fertilising Matters

During autumn, conditions naturally support rhizome production. Cooler nights, heavier dew, and more consistent rainfall all encourage the grass to spread. However, without adequate nutrition, the grass cannot take full advantage of this natural process.

A well-timed fertilising program in autumn helps maximise rhizome development, resulting in a thicker lawn that is better able to compete with winter weeds.

Our Approach to Autumn Fertilising

We apply fertiliser at key times throughout the year to keep lawns healthy and responsive. In autumn, we focus on supporting the grass as it transitions into slower growth while still encouraging root and rhizome development.

This helps the lawn stay greener through winter and recover faster in spring. It also improves the lawn’s ability to resist winter weed invasion.

Managing Thatch and Dry Patches

By March, dry patches often become more noticeable. These are frequently caused by thatch buildup, which can create a water-repellent layer that prevents water from reaching the root zone.

If thatch is an issue, it’s best to address it early in autumn. We generally recommend completing any scarification work before mid-March, as this allows the lawn time to recover before growth slows significantly.

Professional Lawn Care in Autumn

Getting your autumn fertilising and lawn management right has a major impact on how your lawn performs through winter and into the following spring. It also gives you a much better chance of keeping winter weeds under control.

Our 12-month lawn care programs include properly timed fertilising, weed control, and thatch management throughout the year — including important autumn treatments. This removes the guesswork and helps your lawn stay thicker and healthier through the cooler months.
